Written by a friend and colleague Dr. Moslem Bahadori- Pathology Professor Iran Laboratory Community once again lost one of its glitterati and deans. Dr. Ebrahim Beral , the professor and founder of Pathology Clinical Sciences, spent more than 60 years of its honorable life in educating students of different fields of medical sciences and educating pathologists and experts of medical laboratory sciences. Unfortunately he died on Tuesday 15 August 2007 and he left his friends and students with grief and sorrow. Professor Beral was born in Tehran in 1920. After passing his elementary school studies and later his secondary school studies in Iranshahr High School he successfully passed the entrance examination of university of Tehran in 1938 and enrolled in the field of Medical Sciences at the Faculty of Medicine. He finished his MD course in the year 1944, after passing his thesis with an excellent grade. After passing 3 years of general medical services, due to his interest in medical laboratory sciences he started to teach and work in laboratories of the university and in the year 1949 he could pass the examination for selection of medical laboratory sciences assistant with a good grade and he began learning this branch of science in Sina Hospital as an assistant. After successfully passing this course, he took part in the competition for Clinical President (assistant professor)and in 1953 he was elected as the president of the Laboratory Clinic of Sina Hospital. In the year 1963, Dr. Beral was elected as the associate professor of the Pathology Clinical Sciences Department and in the year 1975, upon the vote of the Distinctive Board, he was assigned as the full professor of the same field. During his term of service, Dr. Beral never accepted the governmental responsibilities and he spent all his efforts in Sina Hospital and he continued teaching and learning in this hospital until the end of his academic service, when he was retired. At least 20 years of this period, i.e. from 1970 to 1990, he was presiding the clinical laboratory and blood transfer section of the hospital. I, the writer of these lines, had a close cooperation with Professor Beral in Pathology Section of Sina Hospital since 1969. We should admit that in those times, in terms of laboratory, Sina Hospital as one of the well-known medical centers, had the first role in teaching laboratory medical associate professors. Most of the special practical examinations of this field were carried out in Sina Hospital. There are few educated specialists in this majestic field in Iran who do not consider themselves the students of Professor Beral either directly or indirectly. During this period, one of the Professor’s contributions was the supplying of materials and updating the laboratory equipments, which contribution is really a hard work whether in that time or in the present time. At that time, for several years, Iran did not have Blood Transfer Organization and the Laboratory of Sina Hospital was one of the important centers for supplying blood, because such sectors like orthopedic surgery and urological diseases were supervised under such famous deceased professors like, Professor Adl, Dr. Amir Kia, Dr. Loghmanolmolk, Dr. Motamed, Dr. Kiafar and Dr. Nasirpour and many associate professor colleagues from different active medical centers and medical surgery training institutes. The laboratory of the Hospital rendered all its services free of charge and moreover it educated specialists due to deficit of the number of specialists in medical laboratory sciences. At the beginning of the Revolution, the professor was also the manager of the clinical laboratory and pathology group of the Faculty of Medicine. He was also the secretary of the Board of Examiners for the Laboratory of the Special Medical Education Council for several periods. Professor Dr. Beral was one of the most eminent experts of Medical Laboratory Sciences. He was also active in different state organizations, like Ministry of Health, Forensic Medicine Organization and the Medical System Organization. During his term of service in the University, he was the counseling professor of more than 27 theses in MD level and Specialty level. He was the member of the board of arbitrators in a large number of theses. He wrote many papers in his own field of specialty and he has been the author of various books in medical laboratory sciences. He wrote the book titled “Laboratory courses” in three volumes, which was published by Tehran University Printing House in the year 1967. This book is one of the reference books in the same field. Dr. Ebrahim Beral was the first person in Iran who initiated the method for carrying out hormonal tests, and he founded the Elayza method for different laboratory works. He was one of the founding members of Clinical Laboratory Special and Scientific Associations and he himself was a regular member of these associations. In the fourth congregation held for appreciation of mentors and pioneer professors of the University of Tehran, he was appreciated and in the annual pathology congress, he was introduced as the role model. The professor’s wife, Ms. Helen Baroukh Amiri, died 6 years ago, and the professor was greatly affected by her death. The product of their marriage has been 5 sons, who all have higher educations in Iran, France and United States. These 5 sons are themselves the honors of the people of this country. No one will forget the professor’s effort, compassion and non-stop persistence in developing and completing the medical laboratory sciences and educating specialists for this medical field as well as rendering services to patients, specially the patients of the hospital which has given service to the deprived. We express our condolences to his children and family, all university authorities, physicians and specialists, and more of all to Iran Pathologists Society, and we hope God will bestow the Professor beatitude and remission. Be his soul happy. Tehran- August 2007 |
