The only Jew residing in Afghanistan is not willing to depart
this country and despite numerous problems in the country, he prefers not to
immigrate at the beginning of his 6th decade of life. As reported by Asr-e-Iran,
quoting from Associated Press News Agency (NPNA), Zablon Simintov was born in
the city of Harat and presently he is the only survivor of the Jews who were
more than 40,000 heads in Afghanistan until the 19th century. According to AP,
most Jews settling in Afghanistan were originally Iranian and in 1948 that
Israel was official recognized by United Nations, a large number of them started
to immigrate, but Simintov did not leave Harat and continued to settle in this
city. According to Simintov, upon the entrance of former Soviet Union Army to
Afghanistan, 7 or 8 surviving families out of 40,000 Jews packed their things
and escaped to an unknown destination but he did not chose to leave his homeland
even under Taliban's government. He earns his living through humanitarian aids
of foreign Jews and his Muslim neighbors. This Afghan Jew, whose wife and
children have also immigrated to Israel, explained how he could save his life at
the time of Taliban's government. |
